On Mountains
In 2007 the poet Jeremy Sigler wrote a catalogue essay for my exhibition “Between Us” at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. He coined the word “ carmera” at that time, referring to my road travels with a camera, by car. Framed so, these trips often had a speculative, distant take on the very idea of travel, the conventions associated with it, the images conjured during its anticipation, as well as the form of the work produced upon return. Ten years later I revisited some of these ideas and repeated a childhood family trip when I headed to the Skyline Drive in Virginia, placing myself on its scenic highway with so many others who had also been lured there. This personal as well as common attraction has been central to the informing thoughts for the works that follow.
